Spectrum Medical Italy: Safeguarding Critical Medical Tools with Peli Cases

Transporting sensitive medical tools across Europe requires solutions that are both rugged and reliable. In this success story, discover how Spectrum Medical Italy equips its technicians with Peli cases to safeguard critical instruments and ensure seamless service delivery across their network of hospitals.

About Spectrum Medical

Spectrum Medical is a leading provider of specialised medical equipment and services across Europe, focusing on critical heart-lung and extracorporeal circulation systems used in cardiothoracic surgeries. With a commitment to innovation, safety, and precision, Spectrum Medical’s mission is to support healthcare providers in delivering life-saving treatments to patients.

The Challenge

Maintaining and servicing complex medical devices requires reliable transport solutions. Spectrum Medical’s technicians frequently travel across Europe, visiting hospitals to provide essential maintenance and repairs for life-sustaining machines. Initially, the team used transport cases from other suppliers but encountered significant issues: broken handles, faulty wheels, and inadequate protection for delicate instruments. This not only jeopardised the safety of expensive equipment but also risked delays in providing critical services.

“In my previous job, I saw how reliable Peli cases were. Even when a case fell into the sea, everything inside stayed dry,” shared Oscar Vetrò, Service Manager for Europe at Spectrum Medical. “So, when I joined Spectrum, I knew we needed something just as strong for our technicians.”

The Solution

Recognising the need for robust, dependable transport solutions, Oscar introduced Peli Cases to the Spectrum Medical field service team. Specifically, they adopted the Peli 1535 Air Travel Case for lighter, essential tools and the Peli 1615 Air Travel Case for bulkier, more complex kits. Each case was customised with red (oxblood) or blue (indigo) colours corresponding to Spectrum’s branding and specific machine functions—red for heart-lung machines and blue for the Quantum Heater-Cooler system, affectionately known as “Mr. Frosty”.

The choice of the Air Travel Case line allowed for:

  • Efficient organisation with removable compartments for delicate instruments.
  • Custom foam inserts to protect sensitive diagnostic equipment, such as electrical safety testers.
  • Lightweight yet highly durable protection for frequent air travel.
  • Distinctive colour-coding for easy identification in busy work environments.

“The travel cases fit our needs perfectly. In the top lid compartments, we can put papers and small tools, and the case interior bottom area fits our bigger instruments,” said Oscar. “Plus, the red and blue colours make it easy for our team to grab the right case at a glance.”

Results

Since adopting Peli cases, Spectrum Medical’s service teams have reported:

  • Improved equipment safety: No incidents of tool damage or compromised function during transit, even when travelling internationally.
  • Enhanced technician satisfaction: “Some of our technicians were frustrated with the old cases that weren’t strong enough,” noted Oscar. “Now they’re asking for more Peli cases because they’re so reliable.”
  • Increased operational efficiency: Custom case configurations allow for faster packing and unpacking, ensuring technicians are ready to work on arrival.
  • Brand alignment: Red and blue case colours not only match Spectrum’s branding but also help delineate equipment for different machines.
  • Future growth plans: Spectrum plans to expand its fleet of Peli cases to support more technicians across Europe, replacing legacy transport solutions.
