Where Adrenaline Meets Art: The Fearless Vision of Matic Leben

What inspired you to focus on adrenaline photography, such as helicopter skiing and rescue missions?

I have to say that I’ve been a huge fan of adrenaline ever since I was a kid — I was never afraid to try something new or challenging. Photography and filming, however, came into my life only about four years ago. At first, I mainly shot calmer subjects like concerts and portraits.
After a couple of years, I met my now very good friend Jakob, and we quickly realized that we’re both adrenaline enthusiasts. Since I had always wanted to capture these moments on camera, I soon specialized in this field — filming demanding and extreme scenes.

Now it has become my dream job, and I absolutely love it — combining two things I’m most passionate about: adrenaline and photography.

When you’re in such extreme conditions, what goes through your mind behind the camera — do you think creatively, or are you fully focused on safety and timing?

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve always been passionate about adrenaline. I’m also a member of one of the largest fire departments in Slovenia, PGD Škofja Loka, where I’ve learned many skills that help me during extreme shoots.
I believe this gives me a big advantage over others, as I can stay calm and focus purely on capturing the perfect shot rather than worrying about external risks. Of course, the high-quality professional gear I use also plays a big role — it gives me the confidence that my equipment will stay safe, no matter the environment.

Can you share a moment when you thought, “This shot is worth the risk”?

I’ve worked on many projects, and there have been plenty of risky moments — but one that stands out is a shoot I did with my friend Jakob for the Slovenian Army.

We were filming a special forces training operation, riding in three inflatable boats at full speed — about 60 km/h — heading toward a simulated enemy. Although it was just an exercise, staying balanced on a small, fast-moving boat with six armed soldiers while trying to get the best footage of them and the action was quite an experience! It’s definitely one of those stories I’ll always remember.

Your work captures both adventure and human courage — what’s the most powerful story behind one of your photos?

This might not seem like the most dramatic story to everyone, but to me, it’s one of the most meaningful.
It was during a project with the Slovenian Police Special Unit — the Red Panthers. I had dreamed about working with special forces my whole life, fascinated by their discipline and intensity. To be able to film and photograph them up close was an incredible honor.
The final image we created perfectly captures the essence of that project. Every time I see that photo, I’m reminded of those amazing days of shooting — definitely some of the best I’ve ever had.

Given the demanding conditions of your shoots, which Peli products do you rely on most to protect your gear, and which is your favorite?

The Peli products I currently use are mainly the Peli Air 1535, which I absolutely love. It’s the perfect size — compact but spacious enough to fit all my essential gear. I can take it anywhere — on a plane, helicopter, or boat — without worrying about water, dust, or any harsh environment.

I also use a smaller case from the M40 series for accessories and smaller equipment, and it performs perfectly as well.

Still, my go-to product is definitely the Peli 1535 Air, and I’m hoping to get one in orange next time — it’s been on my wishlist for a while because it looks incredible in photos! 😆🙈

A huge thank you to Matic Leben for taking the time to share his incredible journey and passion for adrenaline photography with us. His stories and experiences from capturing high-speed action to working alongside rescue teams and special forces truly highlight the power of courage, focus, and creativity behind the lens.

We’re grateful to have had the chance to learn more about Matic’s work and the dedication it takes to document life in such extreme environments.

Thank you for being part of this interview and for inspiring others to chase their passions fearlessly!
