1st Peli Mission – Born to ride 2014
“The land teaches us more about ourselves than any book. Because it resists us. Man discovers himself when he is measured against an obstacle.”
– Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Peli is happy to announce the first mission to be chosen for sponsorship under Peli Missions programme. The Born to Ride fixed-gear event starts in just a couple of weeks and will be sponsored with equipment from Peli Products. As its start date is next month, it felt like the appropriate choice for our first sponsored mission.
In the pioneering spirit of the seven young American followers of fixed-gear cycling who embarked on an epic crossing of the USA in 2010, Chilkoot organised the first Born to Ride fixed gear bike trip in France in 2012.
In July 2014, the next chapter of the Born to Ride story is set to take place. This time, two riders will spend three days cycling through the French Alps on fixed gear bicycles. The route will take them through seventeen mythical passes from Evian to Nice, from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean.
Riders Thierry Saint-Léger (56 years old) and Simon Kirscher (27 years old), who have long-standing records of endurance in fixed-gear events, will be cycling with the support of their two-man team. Luc Royer is their support man and Julien Boulanger, aka the Man with the Golden Camera, will be photographing the event.
Tackling the French Alps with fixed gear is a test of endurance in the most extreme conditions, for people and equipment alike. The personal, athletic and mental challenge posed by the French Alps is staggering. The event is a celebration of the essence of sport, the essence of effort and the essence of the human spirit. Peli is proud to be a part of it.
We look forward to keeping you abreast of the event and are excited to be able to share images and experiences in the coming weeks.
